Leave the Leaves!

We are excited to announce the LEAVE THE LEAVES initiative and welcome the Darien Community Association as a key participant of this sustainable practice in our community.

We encourage you to reconsider removing leaves from your property this fall. While clearing leaves from your lawns may seem beneficial for aesthetic reasons, leaving some leaves undisturbed offers significant environmental advantages:

  1. Natural Fertilization: Fallen leaves decompose and return valuable nutrients to the soil, improving its health and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. They can also be mowed to speed up the decomposition process and the shredded leaves can be added to flower and vegetable beds.
  2. Wildlife Habitat: Leaves provide shelter for various species, including insects and small animals, which contribute to a healthy ecosystem. Leaving leaves in place helps to protect vital biodiversity.
  3. Carbon Footprint: Leaf blowers often rely on gas-powered engines, which contribute to air and noise pollution. Minimizing their use reduces carbon emissions and provides us with a quieter, cleaner environment.
  4. Soil Health: A natural layer of leaves helps retain soil moisture and protects the ground from erosion during the colder months.

When choosing a location, pick a site where leaves can be left undisturbed over the winter months like under large trees, planting beds or a designated corner of your yard.

By reducing leaf removal, everyone can contribute to a more sustainable and thriving environment. Learn more here.
