After two recent land acquisitions the Darien Land Trust (DLT) now has more than nearly 220 acres of open space under its protection.
The first acquisition is a six-acre conservation easement from the Ox Ridge Hunt Club (ORHC). This conservation easement is at the south-east corner of the ORHC property and consists of open paddocks in addition to wetland meadow and extensive shrub cover habitat for wildlife.
The property will remain as open space permanently and will be monitored by the DLT.
“We are very grateful to the ORHC, under the leadership of its President Jennifer Anker Whelan and the Board of Governors of ORHC, for protecting this significant property,” DLT executive director Shirley Nichols said in a news release.
The second acquisition is a three-acre coastal meadow on Juniper Road, adjacent to the Goodwives River, which is contiguous with two existing DLT conservation easements.
The protection of this open space preserves coastal views along the Goodwives River, and will be maintained by the DLT as a meadow with native wildflowers and grasses to attract butterflies and birds.
The Darien Land Trust, founded in 1961, currently preserves more than nearly 220 acres of coastal salt marshes,woodlands, meadows and inland wetlands. Membership is open to all and helps support the care of these lands.
